Serving
the children of Allen, Hardin, and Putnam Counties
About our Programs
Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Allen County is one of 500 affiliates of Big Brothers
Big Sisters of America, the nation's premier mentoring organization. We serve
the children of Allen, Hardin, and Putman counties.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Allen County offers volunteer opportunities in community-based and school-based
programs. Many of our mentors have opted for a community-based match with a
strong academic focus which we call school based plus.
We have
approximately 60 children matched with mentors in the community-based program and
will have over 100 in school-based programs by the end of the year.
Volunteers are trained by our professional staff. Support is provided throughout the life of each match.
The community Based Program is your chance to build a
positive relationship with a child through activities you choose to share with
him or her. Volunteers spend one to three hours per week with a child for at
least a year. Throughout the relationship, professional case managers are
available to provide advice and support, helping ensure a successful match.
Volunteers
in school-based programs are matched with children in 1-to-1 relationships but
meet the children for one hour per week or more at their schools. Volunteers
and children participate in tutoring, games, and other activities directed and
supervised by our staff although plenty of time is provided for the volunteer
and child to interact and talk. We currently have programs at three Lima
elementary schools and at Bluffton Elementary; more will be opening before the
end of the school year.
Volunteers
in this program are matched with children in 1-to-1 relationships and may meet
with the child at school or within the community. While this program strongly addresses the child’s academic
needs, activities within the community are used to augment the
relationship. This program offers
the child the advantages of school-based mentoring while allowing the
relationship the flexibility of the community-based mentoring.
Create Memories In
Little Moments
Remember it’s not about finding
the time, it’s about making memories with the time you already have. You can
spend moments together by:
·
Going to
the grocery
·
Baking
cookies
·
Playing
sports
·
Watching
a movie
·
Going for
a walk
·
Swimming
·
Visiting
the library
Or, whatever you’re interests’
are. It’s all about spending one-on-one time with a child.
